What is Easter?
Easter celebrated in honor of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and it is the most important and oldest celebration in Christianity. Easter is symbolized by eggs, which means spring and the awakening of nature and rabbits. Actually, Easter is not a day; it is the time between the end of March and the end of April. Easter is a movable feast, which means the dates of Easter change every year according to the first Sunday after the full moon that falls on or near the ecclesiastical spring equinox. Still, it has to be celebrated between March 22 and April 25. This year, Easter will be celebrated on Sunday, April 17.
Easter is important for many reasons. It is counted as the holiest of holy days, and it brings all families together like other feasts. The most significant difference of Easter is that it is the most loved feast for children. The egg painting, all the candies, and games make Easter an eagerly awaited feast.
How to Plan Easter Egg Hunt?
1-Pick Your Location for Hiding The Eggs
You should pick a large enough location to have a fun hunt experience, but it should not be huge to kill your enjoyment. The location also should have many hiding options so the eggs cannot be found easily.
2-Choose The Types of Eggs You Will Use
The common egg used in Easter is a real boiled egg, but it is not the only option. People use plastic eggs too for decorating. Also, you can fill the plastic eggs with candies, toys, or chocolate (kids will love the eggs and games more).
3-Hide The Easter Eggs
The Egg Hunt can be seen as an activity for children, but it`s not! Generally, the Easter celebrations and dinner include all family members, so you should organize egg hunts, not for only children. For children, you can choose lower and open places, so they can find the eggs easily and have fun. For adults, it is best to choose hard-to-find spots so the enjoyment you will get from the hunt never decreases.
Reminder!
Do not forget to count the eggs before the hunt starts.
Background of Easter
The word ‘Easter’ is thought to have come from the name of a goddess in England named Eostre, who was worshiped at the start of spring before Christ’s time. It is a celebration that comes from Pagan traditions. Pagans organized spring festivals to celebrate the awakening of nature.
How do people celebrate Easter?
As we say, eggs are one of the symbols of Easter. So people turn it into one of the most enjoyable traditions. Decorating plastic or real boiled eggs is the most known tradition of Easter. Easter Egg Hunts are also very popular. They believe a rabbit hides the eggs, and they go hunting to find them. The churches or small businesses that promote themselves also organize the Easter Egg Hunts. Besides Easter eggs and the Easter bunny, games like flying kites or leapfrogs are also trendy.
There are many different traditions all over the world to celebrate Easter. For example;
- There is a tradition of wearing new clothes and making Easter bonnets in the US, which are fancy hats decorated with flowers, bunnies, and other spring symbols.
- In Greece, they throw their pans and pots from balconies and break them on the streets.
- In Eastern Europe, there is a water war between girls and boys. They throw water at each other to celebrate Easter.
- In Norway (this is probably the most interesting tradition related to Easter), reading and solving crime novels are very popular.
