Are there any exhibitions around the city?
Should we do an indoor activity?
We haven’t been for a while, should we go to the museum?
All these are the signs of fall, and if you are in Istanbul, you couldn’t be happier!
Here is the perfect activity for art lovers!
The 17th Istanbul Biennial!
What is the Istanbul Biennial?
Many people are participating in the 17th Istanbul Biennial, including musicians, writers, researchers, artists, and so on. With its 17th edition, the Istanbul Biennial, which has been running since 1987, plans to make Istanbul the center of contemporary art. The biennial participants come from around the world, according to its curators Ute Meta Bauer, Amar Kanwar, and David Teh. The participants’ ongoing projects will be displayed in different Istanbul neighborhoods.
The audience will encounter the 17th Istanbul Biennial at 12 exhibition locations around the cities of Beyoglu, Kadikoy, Fatih, and Zeytinburnu, as well as at bookstores, nursing homes, metro stations, and a radio station.
The biennial is organized between 17 September–20 November 2022.
What Are You Going to See at the Istanbul Biennial?
In addition to free exhibitions, the biennial will feature many outdoor performances, gatherings, talks, and movie screenings. Audiences will experience many projects over the biennial, including poetry readings, magazine promotions, movie screenings, podcast recordings, workshops, puppet performances, and so on.
Listen To The Participants of The Biennial!
One of the other activities you will see at the Istanbul Biennial is the live broadcasts of Açık Radio. Açık Radio will engage in conversation with the attendees and audience through live broadcasts, radio performances, and talks in an open studio in Barn Han. You can listen to English recordings on IKSV’s accounts on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Deezer.
The Locations of the Istanbul Biennial
The metro tunnel under Taksim Square, the Zeytinburnu Medicinal Plants Garden, the biennial exhibitions, conventional museums, and exhibition spaces, a remnant hammam Mimar Sinan built for Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha in the 16th century, a Greek school that hasn’t been used in more than twenty years, and a hammam.
It will take place across 12 locations, including the Plant Garden, several of which will be used as exhibition halls for the first time in the biennial context. The 17th Istanbul Biennial display locations, mainly in the Beyoglu, Fatih, and Kadköy districts, will tell a remarkable tale both via their use as venues and through the inclusion of the histories of the communities in which they are situated.
